Waterford Oncologist Comes Home to His Naval Roots

A desire to work within the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute and a love of the Connecticut shoreline has brought Dr. Michael Kane back to his roots.

Dr. Kane, the new Director of Physician System Integration for the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute and now practicing in the Institute’s Waterford center, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who served six years of active duty, including time on three submarines based out of the Groton.

“I always loved Connecticut,” said Kane, an Erie, Pa., native and avid sailor. “I had two hours of downtime during my orientation a few weeks back so I decided to drive over to the sub base and visit the [Submarine Force Library and Museum.]  It brought back a lot of good memories.”

After completing active duty, Kane went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School in Newark and completed fellowship training in Neoplastic Diseases at Mount Sinai University Hospital in New York City.  Dr. Kane has been recognized by his peers as a “Top Doc” in New Jersey and is ranked among the “Best Doctors in America.” His areas of interest include breast, gynecologic and lung cancers.

During his career, Kane has also developed community oncology programs for the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and most recently the Atlantic Health System.

“I hope to help the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute grow, especially in the area of integrating institutional programs into community practices and into the community,” said Kane.

Kane says getting the opportunity to work under the leadership of Institute Physician-in-Chief Dr. Peter Yu is another reason he was drawn back to Connecticut.

“I know he is a very progressive, forward-thinking physician, said Kane. “That’s the kind of atmosphere I want to practice in.”

Dr. Kane is accepting patients at 196 Parkway South, Waterford.  To connect, with Dr. Kane call 860.443.4455. You can also reach Dr. Kane or other providers at the Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute’s Waterford office by clicking here.
