New Cancer Institute Opens in Manchester

It’s a new day at Hartford HealthCare that brings with it the grand opening of a state-of-the-art cancer institute on Tolland Turnpike in Manchester and a new CEO at the helm of Hartford HealthCare. Here’s CEO Jeff Flaks:

Q. Explain how the launch of this new cancer institute which you are celebrating tonight in Manchester aligns with your vision as you take on this new role as CEO.

A.  I couldn’t be more proud to be here tonight to launch what represents a firm commitment to our community.  This is a shining example of our mission to improve the health and well-being of the people that live in our communities.

This world-class cancer center right here in Manchester will also allow patients greater access and proximity to advanced cancer care services east of Hartford; including such specialties as breast care, cardiology, urology and thoracic cancer to name a few along with primary care physicians to provide well-coordinated care in one place.

We are also providing patients with a dedicated infusion center that includes 15 private patient areas all designed with the patients comfort and convenience in mind.

At HHC, we pride ourselves as a major economic driver in the state of Connecticut, and an undeniable force for good in every city and town that we serve and this new cancer center is just one example of that.

Q. Why was Manchester selected as a place for Hartford HealthCare to build a new cancer center?

A.  In determining which area would benefit greatly from having a cancer center in town, system administrators set out to conduct research and studied community access points to determine the most centralized areas to provide a high-level of specialized cancer care.  Manchester was a solid middle ground for many patients where it would have the most impact, and where patients would benefit from a seamless coordination of care.  The search really came down to finding the best location where patients need us the most.  Again, it’s about bringing multi-faceted levels of care close to home.

Q. What role will your partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering play in this new cancer center?

A. Our partnership with MSK, the world’s most elite, top cancer treatment and research center really cements our mission and our vision for this new cancer center here in Manchester.  As the charter member of the MSK alliance, patients east of Hartford will have access to clinical trials and research conducted right in their hometown.  There is no need to travel to New York City to access leading-edge trials and treatment.

We have come so far, but there is much more to do.  As you mentioned this is a ‘new day’ and I am honored to be leading the next chapter and taking healthcare in our state to the next level and we are beginning that right here tonight in Manchester.
