The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute announced the appointment of Dr. Niamey Wilson as associate director of its Breast Program. She will assist Dr. Patricia DeFusco, the program’s medical director, in advancing comprehensive, patient-centered, evidence-based breast care.

This role expands Dr. Wilson’s current work as the Cancer Institute’s director of breast surgery quality and research and breast surgery division leader with the Hartford HealthCare Medical Group.

“In her time at HHC, Dr. Wilson has emerged as a surgical leader and powerful patient advocate, drawing patients from around the state and beyond,” said Dr. Peter Yu, physician-in-chief of the Cancer Institute.

He said Drs. DeFusco and Wilson will promote collaboration among multidisciplinary specialists. Dr. Wilson is also committed to the rigorous evaluation and standardization of high-quality breast care across HHC, ensuring that no matter where a woman seeks care, she will receive world-class treatment. She will also develop community and professional partnerships to help grow breast surgical services throughout HHC and optimize care delivery to underserved populations.

“The HHC Breast Program is Connecticut’s leader in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Nearly one in three women with breast cancer receives care at one of our HHC facilities. We look forward to continued growth and exciting new achievements under the expert leadership of Drs. DeFusco and Wilson,” Dr. Yu said.

Dr. Wilson earned a medical degree at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completed a general surgery residency and advanced fellowship training in breast surgical oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. While there, she was selected to become a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and received her Master’s in Health Policy Research, conducting studies evaluating nationwide trends in surgical decision-making. She joined HHC in 2019, after serving as chief of breast surgery at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. She is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

Dr. Wilson is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a member of multiple other surgical societies. Her commitment to women’s health extends beyond the office, and she enjoys a national reputation as a role model for female physicians and outspoken advocate for patient rights.
