Beyond the Back

Dr. Yanamadala explains how determining the right treatment for back and spine conditions requires tapping into the entire spectrum of care. This multidisciplinary approach might involve the spine surgeon, a podiatrist, an interventional pain specialist, and a physical therapist. It’s important that these specialists work together to determine the right treatment for each patient.

“Everyone’s on the same page,” he said. “We’re often even in the same room discussing the case with the patient. It’s not just about the right care – it’s about getting the right care faster.”

The Best Surgery is No Surgery

Most of us would rather avoid surgery – and so does Dr. Yanamadala.

“I tell every patient the best surgery is no surgery,” he said. “It is the last resort after we’ve tried every other option.”

He says integrative therapies often prove successful in treating back pain.

“Therapies such as dry needling and acupuncture, physical therapy, chiropractic care – all of these can dramatically help with back pain in a way that we can frequently avoid surgery.”
