The Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute (COI) at MidState Medical Center marked its five-year anniversary this month. Following significant renovation and construction, investment in robotic technologies, and the assembly of a highly specialized team with a focus on quality and experience, the Institute has grown to 61 physicians, performing more than 4,000 surgeries in FY21 alone.

In the last five years, the Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute has marked notable achievements, including:

  • First in the country to receive Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery from The Joint Commission. The certification follows a rigorous review by The Joint Commission, an independent organization dedicated to improving healthcare for the public
  • Awarded the Advanced Hip/Knee certification from The Joint Commission
  • Named among America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics by the Women’s Choice Award (2021)
  • Grew to 61 participating physicians who are highly skilled in their specialty
  • Inaugural winner of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses One Award (2020)
  • Healthgrades Five-Star Recipient for Total Knee Replacement (2019-2021) and Spinal Fusion Surgery (2021)

“Five years ago we embarked on a journey that has truly transformed the delivery of orthopaedic care in Connecticut,” said Gary Havican, president of MidState Medical Center and The Hospital of Central Connecticut. “I am proud of the work we’ve accomplished and our team’s commitment to continuous improvement. We are here to meet the needs of our community with the most exceptional experience close to home.”

“The quality and experience our team provides our patients is truly unique,” said John McCallum, MD, medical director, Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute at MidState Medical Center. “We are nationally recognized because our processes keep quality and safety at the forefront of every program we design. I am looking forward to many more successful years to come.”
