Backus and Windham hospitals have both earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The hospitals are the first two in eastern Connecticut to receive the certification that reflects their ongoing commitment to providing safe, consistent and quality care for patients.
“Our total joint program has been working hard towards this distinguished designation,” said Biren Chokshi, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Windham Hospital. “Windham Hospital is truly a unique community hospital providing robotic joint replacement that meets the rigorous requirements to be deemed an Advanced Center for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. This is a huge boost for our community!”
“I’m very pleased that Backus has achieved Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification from the Joint Commission,” added Backus Hospital orthopedic surgeon Scott Stanat, MD. “This certification represents years of hard work by the staff and institution. This shows how we strive for the best patient care, quality and outcomes possible for hip and knee joint replacement. Our staff is continuously focused on providing excellent patient care. We will continue to focus on clinical excellence in hip and knee replacement in the future. I want to thank the staff of Backus Hospital for their years of hard work to bring out Total Joint program to the status it is today.”
Both hospitals underwent rigorous, unannounced onsite reviews to earn this designation. The certification, offered in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, focuses on the communication and collaboration among all health care providers involved in the care of the patient. This includes initial orthopedic consultation and pre-operative, intra-operative and post-surgical orthopedic care. During the visit, the reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients.
