Backus Hospital will host a free virtual information session on cervical spine disorders on Tuesday, May 28, from 6-7 p.m.

The session is led by Michael Halperin, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Backus Hospital. Dr. Halperin is board-certified in orthopedic spine surgery. The webinar includes time for a question-and-answer session.

Among the topics Dr. Halperin will cover are:

  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment options available

In general, cervical spine disorders involve the vertebrae and the discs between the vertebrae, joints, muscles, and ligaments.

Common cervical spine disorders include:

  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Cervical herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Cervical spinal stenosis
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Cervical radiculopathy

These disorders can be caused by injury or degeneration. Causes of degeneration can include normal “wear and tear,” stress, smoking, or aging.

Symptoms include:

  • Neck pain
  • Pain in the head, jaw, shoulders, arms, or legs
  • Numbness and/or weakness
  • Impaired coordination or balance
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of bowel and bladder control
