Curious about spine disorders?
Backus Hospital will host a free virtual information session on cervical spine disorders on Tuesday, May 28, from 6-7 p.m.
The session is led by Michael Halperin, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Backus Hospital. Dr. Halperin is board-certified in orthopedic spine surgery. The webinar includes time for a question-and-answer session.

- Diagnosis
- Treatment options available
In general, cervical spine disorders involve the vertebrae and the discs between the vertebrae, joints, muscles, and ligaments.
Common cervical spine disorders include:
- Cervical spondylosis
- Cervical herniated disc
- Degenerative disc disease
- Cervical spinal stenosis
- Cervical myelopathy
- Cervical radiculopathy
These disorders can be caused by injury or degeneration. Causes of degeneration can include normal “wear and tear,” stress, smoking, or aging.
Symptoms include:
- Neck pain
- Pain in the head, jaw, shoulders, arms, or legs
- Numbness and/or weakness
- Impaired coordination or balance
- Difficulty breathing
- Loss of bowel and bladder control
