Carly is dangerously undereducated and unfortunately can’t provide simple answers for questions that many bariatric patients ask post-surgery. For example, she was unable to interpret a simple CBC. She used my H/H being “in the green area” as a reason why I was not iron deficient yet did not understand the role of ferritin and the fact that my very low ferritin was compensating, thus artificially elevating my H/H to look “normal”. She does not understand the fundamentals of post-operative vitamin deficiencies and was unable to explain the role of thiamine in the body. “It does something….” She had no sense of the life-threatening nature of whole body thiamine deficiency (wet beri beri/dry beri beri) nor did she ask any questions to elucidate whether I could have any of these symptoms. She requested additional labs to prove an already proven deficiency. FYI the risks of untreated thiamine deficiency far outweigh any “risks” of repleting an already thiamine sufficient patient (but she didn’t know that). In the end, I went to a hematologist - this is a doctor MD appropriately trained in blood-disorders and vitamin deficiencies. He immediately recognized both my iron-deficiency anemia and my thiamine deficiency and I was promptly treated. I’ve felt great ever since. She may be nice but her fundamental lack of understanding of labs that should be run annually in a population highly at risk for vitamin, iron and other deficiencies is downright dangerous bordering on negligence. An unfortunate example of scope of practice creep.
