Backus Hospital includes The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich; health centers in Montville, Colchester, Ledyard, Norwich and North Stonington; the Backus Outpatient Care Center in Norwich; the Plainfield Backus Emergency Care Center, which is a stand-alone emergency department and outpatient center.

It is the only trauma center in Windham and New London Counties and houses one of Hartford HealthCare's LIFE STAR helicopters.

Visiting Hours

To support our patients in their recoveries, we welcome visitors 24 hours per day, seven days per week, in most areas of the hospital. We know that during hospitalization you are comforted when accompanied by friends and loved ones.

Birthing Center
12:00-8:00 PM daily after delivery. Grandparents and other visitors may visit outside normal hours.

Critical Care Unit
According to patient's needs.

Emergency Department
When there are multiple visitors, the ED staff will encourage families and visitors to designate a representative for the group.

Psychiatric Inpatient Services
7:00-8:00 PM Monday-Fridays
1:00-3:00 PM and 7:00-8:00 PM on weekends and hospital holidays

Same Day Surgery
Patients may have two visitors in their rooms until they leave for surgery and, at the discretion of the nurse caring for the patient, upon their return from PACU (recovery room).
