What Test Do You Need?
The first step in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders is a taking a complete history of your symptoms along with a complete neurologic exam that includes tests for:
- Strength
- Sensation
- Reflexes
- Functional movement
You may then be sent for blood work and diagnostic imaging tests such as an MRI, electrodiagnostic testing and skin or nerve biopsies.
Available Tests
- Electrodiagnostic testing. There are two parts to this – nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG). For NCS, a small electrical current is used to prompt a nerve to fire a signal that is measured through an electrode placed on the skin. We then analyze the signal for abnormalities. With EMG, a small needle is inserted into a muscle to measure its characteristics at rest and when contracted. These measurements are analyzed for abnormalities. Some types of neuropathies cannot be measured by these tests. If you have one of those, your provider will explain other options.
- Skin biopsy.
- Neuromuscular ultrasound. Used in combination with EMG, this can detect nerve injuries, inflammation, cysts and tumors.
- Evoked potential test.
