Patient Support

Providing multifaceted support for patients and families is part of what we do every day at the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center and social workers help make that happen.

As part of our patient-centered model, the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center offers onsite social work support and wellness services for patients and their families. Our social workers are specially qualified to help you, your loved ones, and your caregivers adapt to the emotional, physical, and practical concerns of living with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders. We provide comprehensive services such as:

  • Connecting patients with community resources and behavioral health providers.
  • Applying for state and federal assistance programs including Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Legal processes to establish durable power of attorney and/or conservatorship.
  • Helping families and patients to understand the various levels of care, such as assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing facilities, and deciding which setting is best.
  • Individual, couples and group psychotherapy.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Integrative & Holistic Medicine

Chase Family Movement Disorders Center has partnered with Hartford HealthCare Integrative Medicine to offer on-site acupuncture and massage services in our Vernon, Cheshire and Mystic locations.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a technique that involves applying sterilized needles to specific acupuncture points on the body. This stimulates the nervous system to release certain chemicals in the brain.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the practice is thought to restore the flow of Qi –the primal life force in the body. It can relieve pain, reduce stress, strengthen the immune system and increase both the function and quality of people’s lives.

  • Available in our outpatient offices throughout the state
  • Physician referral or order may be necessary, depending on insurance coverage
  • Initial sessions may be complimentary to patients of the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center
  • Subsequent payments due at time of service -$80 per session
  • Patients: To request a session or find out more information, please call 860.870.6385

Used as an Alternative/Complementary Therapy for:

  • Allergies, Asthma, Common Colds, Sinusitis
  • Digestive problems
  • Nausea and vomiting (ex. post-op, pregnancy, chemotherapy-related)
  • Emotional disturbances
  • Ear-Nose-Throat complaints
  • Gynecological issues
  • Musculoskeletal difficulties
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Neurological illnesses (ex. Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, stroke)

Conditions that may be helped include:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Fibromyalgia symptoms
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Depression

What is the experience like?

  • The needles used by an acupuncturist are very thin (some are as slender as the diameter of a human hair) and the points of the needle are smooth, not sharp. Insertion by an experienced acupuncturist usually results in little to no discomfort.
  • While the needles are in the body, patients may feel completely relaxed, fall asleep, or feel energized. They may feel sensations of energy traveling through their body, a feeling of heaviness at the needle site, or they may feel nothing at all.
  • Following the treatment, many patients feel very relaxed and rejuvenated and pain is diminished or relieved. The length of relief varies in each case from a few hours to a few days, or complete resolution of pain.

Nutrition Consultations

Consultation visits include comprehensive health histories and review of diet, nutritional supplementation, exercise, stress management, sleep and overall lifestyle.

Work with one of our naturopathic doctors to create customized recommendations to prevent and treat illness with complementary nutrition support. We will understand your needs, review your existing regimen and habits, and tailor a nutritional plan that suits each individual patient. Supplements may be recommended to replenish deficiencies in the body and add nutritional value to an existing diet.

Within the Integrative Medicine practice, we promote wellness by understanding that nutrition and diet often are root causes for health dysfunction, and we aim to treat the body as a complex and dynamic biological system. We may focus on changing intake of particular foods, treating deficiencies of particular nutrients, or adjusting eating patterns so that you are eating at the right time of day, in the right portion sizes.

Personalized consults will typically review an existing diet by asking patients to describe their food intake for the past 48–72 hours, and we may provide “diet diaries” for patients to bring home and record their food intake. We will then review at a follow-up appointment and create a personalized meal plan that suits your needs and goals.

Physicians also can order additional laboratory or diagnostic tests to help develop a unique treatment plan that will address ongoing health concerns. Visits to our Integrative Medicine physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRNs) and physician Assistants (PAs), may be covered by health insurance.

Speech Therapy - SPEAK OUT!® and The LOUD Crowd®

Hartford Healthcare Rehabilitation Network is pleased to offer a two-part speech therapy program to help individuals with Parkinson’s regain and maintain effective communication: SPEAK OUT!® followed by The LOUD Crowd®.

SPEAK OUT!® places emphasis on speaking with intent and converting speech from an automatic function to an intentional act. Together, patients and their speech-language pathologist work through a series of speech, voice, and cognitive exercises outlined in a SPEAK OUT!® Workbook.

Upon completion of SPEAK OUT!®, patients transition to The LOUD Crowd®. This maintenance program consists of weekly group sessions led by a speech-language pathologist. The SPEAK OUT!® exercises are performed, and group members provide support, encouragement, and accountability to one another.

Participation in The LOUD Crowd®, along with daily home practice and six-month re-evaluations, has been shown to help patients maintain their communication skills throughout the progression of Parkinson’s.

For more information about SPEAK OUT!® and The LOUD Crowd® or to schedule a speech evaluation, please call 860.490.9284.

Maintenance Crew and Seated Flow

The seated and standing community Parkinson’s wellness classes at Hartford Hospital Rehabilitation Network are offered to graduates of our skilled physical therapy and occupational therapy programs.

The classes are instructed by a physical therapist or occupational therapist. The primary goal of group exercise is to prevent decline and progression of Parkinson’s disease symptoms through promoting safe mobility, improving coordination, and motor planning, as well as enhancing endurance, strength and flexibility. Classes use a variety of approaches including stretching, strengthening, cardio, dual tasking, balance, and coordination tasks to promote safety and wellness. All goals for the class are based on the Parkinson’s Foundation exercise guidelines.
